Frequently Asked Questions
How do I choose the right therapist for me?
Choosing the right therapist is a personal decision, and it matters. A good starting point is to consider what you are looking for support with, such as anxiety, ADHD, maternal mental health, life transitions, relationship concerns, or something else entirely. Then look for a therapist with specific training and experience in those areas.
Pay attention to how you feel in that first conversation. Effective therapy is built on trust, safety, and genuine collaboration. You should feel respected, understood, and comfortable asking questions. Research consistently shows that the quality of the therapeutic relationship is one of the strongest predictors of positive outcomes, so finding someone you feel connected to is worth prioritizing.
At Compass Counseling and Psychological Services in East Greenwich, RI, we believe therapy should feel individualized, supportive, and empowering. Our clinicians work collaboratively with clients to ensure care is aligned with their goals, values, and lived experiences. If at any point you feel a therapist is not the right fit, it is always appropriate to discuss this or explore other options. Your care should work for you.
What is your cancellation policy?
We ask that you provide at least 48 hours notice if you need to cancel or reschedule. You can contact your therapist or us directly, or log into your Jane account. Appointments canceled with less than 48 hours notice are subject to the full session fee. We understand that life does not always go to plan, and we are happy to waive the fee in the case of a genuine medical emergency.
How often will I need to attend therapy?
That depends on your goals, needs, and treatment plan. Most clients start with weekly sessions to build momentum and establish a strong foundation. As things shift and goals are met, sessions often move to every other week or less frequently.
Some people benefit from short-term, focused work. Others prefer ongoing support for longer-term growth or more complex concerns. At Compass Counseling and Psychological Services, we will regularly review your progress and adjust the schedule to reflect what is most helpful and sustainable for you.
Do you accept insurance?
We are a private-pay practice and do not bill insurance directly. This allows us to focus fully on individualized care without the limitations that insurance coverage can place on treatment.
We are happy to provide a detailed superbill upon request, which you can submit to your insurance company for possible out-of-network reimbursement. Eligibility and reimbursement rates vary by plan, so we encourage you to contact your provider directly to understand your out-of-network mental health benefits.
